SONG TO ONEHUNGA WHARF

A stevedore in blue overalls

is crossed by a seagull’s shadow.

Salt-grizzled fishing boats

in the basin rub shoulder to shoulder

like trawlermen in the Manukau Arms.

Onehunga wharf you leave a taste of iron sand on my lip.

Your channel spidery with tides

silvery too with sunlight and herrings.

Where navigation buoys wobble like skittles

I watch gannets pursue ancient piracy.

Onehunga wharf why does Auckland turn its back on you?

Your silos of Golden Bay cement

might allude to another nirvanic port

but for the rusty roses of your fishing boats

and for those seagulls whose wings have circled me

on the hour when the tide is high

I will be your harbour master.
